Blank Canvas

Blank Canvas was written in the summer of 2022, which I often recall being the “best summer of my life”. The story picks up after Bittersweet where our main character has become an artist. She is finally living a life where she is young and free and finally had positive experiences to shape her into the person she wanted to become. Blank Canvas also represents the character’s new found love for art and creating new things to keep her alive and happy. The interlude, titled  “Critics Are Raving About Addy Faith”, brings a twist to the album, showing the negative side of sharing your art with the world. In the interlude, it is revealed the character we’ve been cheering on this whole time was the character, Addy Faith. In the interlude, the people on the radio shed Addy Faith in a bad light, expressing their critiques about her music. Addy, in the album, feels suddenly trapped in a loop of wanting to create art, but feeling as if she isn’t made for it or will never be respected due to the feedback of her peers. Towards the end of the album, the narrative switches with the song “Vaguely”, where she expresses how the same people who spoke negatively about her art, do the same thing in their own ways, so why is it wrong if she does it? She then decides that if her art is worth tearing down, there must be something powerful enough about it to make people feel threatened. She will continue making art and will never feel ashamed for it, and in fact, holds herself to a higher standard to continue topping everything she does in order to grow. In “So Does She”, she even mentions how she constantly compares herself to others, but in fact, it’s society that places others on a pedestal in order for others to feel like they’ll never reach it. In this story, she will in fact keep climbing. Blank Canvas Deluxe showed more positive and negative short stories of her life, including “Cruel Intentions”, which talks about sexual identity and the power structure in relationships, which was later replaced by “Lonely” due to ownership issues with the producer. Later in April 2023, Addy Faith, the real person (me), was able to obtain rights to the song and released it as a single. Blank Canvas Deluxe concludes with the song “Enjoy the Show” written in honor of my sister, Zion, who passed away from Lupus, TTP and kidney failure on December 1, 2022, just one month after the release of Blank Canvas.
